Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05) retweeted a comment Monday from actor Tom Arnold, who suggested that Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) deserved to be attacked by his neighbor in November 2017.
As The Minnesota Sun reported, Paul offered to contribute to Omar’s travel expenses so she could return to Somalia, saying a trip to her native country might help her “appreciate America more.”
“So while I’m not saying we forcibly send her anywhere, I’m willing to contribute to buy her a ticket to go visit Somalia and I think she could maybe learn a little bit about the disaster that is Somalia that has no capitalism. It has no God-given rights guaranteed in a constitution. And it has about seven different tribes that have been fighting each other for the last 40 years. And then maybe after she’s visited Somalia for a while, she might come back and appreciate America more,” Paul told reporters last week.
Arnold, the ex-husband of Roseanne Barr, said it was “no wonder” Paul’s neighbor attacked him.
“Imagine being Rand Paul’s next door neighbor and having to deal with Rand Paul lying cowardly circular whiney bullcrap about lawn clippings. No wonder he ripped his toupee off,” Arnold wrote on Twitter, and Omar later retweeted the comments.
Paul was tackled by his neighbor, Rene Boucher, in November 2017 while mowing his lawn. He suffered six broken ribs and a pleural effusion as a result of the attack. Boucher pleaded guilty to felony assault and received 30 days in prison.
Omar has repeatedly accused her Republican colleagues of inciting violence against her.
“This is dangerous incitement, given the death threats I face. I hope leaders of both parties will join me in condemning it,” Omar wrote on Twitter in April in response to comments from Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-02).
Sergio Gor, Paul’s communications director, responded to Omar on Twitter Monday afternoon.
“Shameful behavior from one of the leading voices and faces of the Dem party. Why is Ilhan retweeting this abhorrent tweet? We should never tolerate violence or promote it,” he said.
